t:slim insulin pump
PART # 2. MY MOM’S EXPERIENCE AND MINE WITH T:SLIM INSULIN PUMP
WITH T:SLIM INSULIN PUMP
MY MOM’S EXPERIENCE
My mom received t:slim insulin pump, and she started pumping July 27,2013. She is 77 years old. Her first pump was Minimed Paradigm 712 . In two years after using Minimed she switched to omnipod. Is easy and simple insulin pump. Issues with pod push me to switch her to another insulin pump.
Why did I switch my mom to t:slim insulin pump?
1. Redesigned cartridge.
Build on Micro-
My mom has retinopathy (eye complication). One of the hardest parts of pumping is priming. You have to watch for air bubbles. Priming includes several steps, which are simple and easy to accomplish on t:slim.
She did experience “fat finger error” (human error caused by pressing the wrong key).
3. Uploading data from pump to computer is simple.
I don’t believe in miracle even you use one of the best insulin pump. It includes a lot of work behind. You must analyze your blood sugar reports for adjusting your pump’s settings.
It was an interesting experience when we started to use t:slim. We used Fifty 50 infusion set. You can read more here….
When we turned on the pump, she could see, read and press on the screen without the magnifier. Yes, she pressed on the wrong menu. It took her several times before she could proceed further. Screen of t:slim is not big enough.
My dad was always helping my mom to prime the pump when she used Omnipod and Minimed. They primed t:slim around 7 PM, quick without any problems, then she inserted fifty 50 infusion set 6 mm.
Next morning, when she woke up, her blood sugar was over 300. She gave the bolus with the pump. Blood sugar was going up and up, finally it reached over 450. She corrected with insulin pen, and then she changed infusion set. When she removed fifty 50 infusion set it was bended. Pump didn’t alarm occlusion. I switched her on metal cannula and by evening her blood sugar drop below 200. Next morning, her blood sugar return to 114.
I was using different insulin pumps for over 19 years. For this time I didn’t see any significant changes in improving safety and quality of them. When t: slim insulin pump came first on market, I made comprehensive investigation based on development and functionality of the pump. What made me choose this pump over others.
I was using Animas Ping insulin pump for over 2 years. Together with my endocrinologist we sent official request to my health insurance to cover t: slim insulin pump. Long story insurance told me, they never received the letter and etc.
If you own insulin pump and your pump is still under warranty and it was paid by insurance within 4 years, NO WAY you can be covered.
Insurance will only upgrade your insulin pump if you have developed complications and your health condition between death and life. I’m not sure if in this case you really need insulin pump.
Why I bought t:slim insulin pump.
1. INSULIN PUMP WAS DEVELOPED BASED ON HUMAN FACTOR RESEARCH.
On previous page I described human factor research and how Tandem Diabetes Care uses it to develop t: slim. As you can see how much work was involved from Tandem diabetes care in developing such modern piece of technology. This pump stands up for safety.
2. LARGE VOLUME CARTRIDGE.
T:slim insulin pump holds 300 cc of insulin
3. NEW DESIGNED UNIQUE CARTRIDGE SYSTEM.
The first insulin pump that utilize micro delivery technology.
4. USAGE OF INSULIN PUMP IS SUPER EASY AND SIMPLE.
( programming meal bolus, basal rates and other configurations) With all insulin pumps (minimed, omnipod, animas) when you change basal rate, programming new settings usually it resets and deletes your temporary bolus or even cancel bolus which is in delivery mode. With t:slim you can continue to deliver meal bolus and activate different programming of your pump and still make configuration changes (changing basal rate settings and etc)
5. TOUCH SCREEN AND RECHARGEABLE BATTERY.
You can recharge battery when you take a shower, time of charging depends how much your battery was drained. Recharging is fast.
6. HIGH RESOLUTION COLOR SCREEN.
I’m using t: slim insulin pump approximately close to a year and screen of the pump has no scratches. Tandem will provide you with screen protector free of charge by mail and they will mail you 2 screen protectors at the time with instruction how to apply.
Size of the pager. The first insulin pump which has square form compare to all other insulin pumps. You are not shame to show your pump.
8. SIMPLICITY OF THE HOME PAGE SCREEN.
When you wake up your insulin pump you can see right away IOB and time remaining for insulin. Also by pressing on the amount of insulin in the right upper corner you can see all your major setting for this hour (basal rate)
Left upper corner is your battery and on the middle of the pump is meal bolus and options.
9. FINANCIAL GROWTH OF TANDEM DIABETES CARE AS A COMPANY.
As you know Tandem is trading on NASDAQ stock exchange under trade name – TNDM. If you are interesting how financial company is doing you can read report "Tandem Diabetes Care Reports Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2013 Financial Results"
I only use one reminder change of infusion set. This reminder first was introduced by Deltec Cozmo insulin pump.
Low BG – notifies you to re-
High BG – notifies you to re-
After Bolus BG – notifies you to test your BG a selected time
period after a bolus
Missed Meal Bolus
11. BODY MATERIAL IS EXTREMELY DURABLE.
By holding this pump you can say -
Delivery during Bolus:
Bolus > 3 units Approximately 2 units/min
Bolus < 3 units Approximately 1.6 units/min
Rate of delivery during prime is approximately 7 units/min. This rate is slow.
Bolus Duration Bolus > 3 units duration Approximately 30 seconds/unit
Bolus < 3 units duration Approximately 37 seconds/unit
Frequency of Basal Delivery 5 minutes for all Basal Rates
PRICE – this is one of the main question. Does it make sense to purchase this insulin pump for cash?
I chose this pump because my demand in insulin rises. All current insulin pumps experience problem with occlusion alarm. Tslim insulin pump has high occlusion sensitivity. With t: slim insulin pump, I received occlusion alarms several times. First time infusion set tubing was kink and other time when my blood sugar was going up and I was trying to administrate correction bolus after delivering several units pump stopped and show occlusion alert alarm.
You can’t compare t:slim with Asante insulin pump. I’m not impressed with Asante and I will write in more detail soon. Tandem Diabetes Care is moving up in diabetes technology by introducing in near feature continues glucose monitoring system adding to t:slim. I’m sure in the 2nd version of t: slim you will find more new features which will make your life much easier.
T: slim INSULIN PUMP IS WATERTIGHT -
Tandem Diabetes care tested t:slim insulin pump with Humalog and Novolog.
Apidra was not tested with t:slim insulin pump
I've used Apidra with all my previous insulin pumps without any problems, but now using Apidra with t:slim makes my blood sugar high.
How to turn off t:slim insulin pump
