Animas Vibe Insulin Pump Review
Food database loaded in the insulin pump bolus menu in the Animas Vibe pump. I don’t like it. It’s Useless. The screen of the pump is small; it’s difficult for searching such large database of the food.
The top button will assess to the main CGM screen. The function of this button is the awake pump with the screen that displays your blood sugar (CGM) or adjust the color contrast of the screen.
The CGM (graphs) screen is useless and slow to redraw.

The Animas Vibe, improve safety when you in the bolus screen and you are scrolling how many units to administrate, by pressing arrow up will displayed numbers of the unit calculate by the pump.
I was using t: slim insulin pump for over a year, and I noticed my blood sugar doesn’t control well when I restarted on Animas Vibe my blood sugar control return to normal.
Insulin on Board (IOB) calculation shows how much insulin is active from previous (correction/meal) bolus.
Two important piece of information for pump’s algorithm to calculate IOB are time remaining for insulin (usually is 4 hours) and the amount of insulin administrated.
Insulin on Board only deducted from correction bolus.
IOB used only for correction bolus.
IOB doesn’t include basal and never subtracted from food bolus.
Meal Bolus only cover the amount of carbs in your meal.
Rotating Clip for Animas Insulin Pump
My experience with Animas insulin pump is going back to 2011. When Animas Vibe becomes available for the upgrade, I switched over from t: slim insulin pump.
OneTouch Vibe is the first insulin pump on the market with integrated Dexcom G4 Platinum CGMS.
Upgrade option available for existing customers, only if your pump is remaining under warranty. The price for the upgrade is $100. When you place the order for upgrade, your credit card will be charged $799 and after returning your old insulin pump (Animas Ping) credit card will be refunded $700.
The size of the Animas Vibe pump is the same as previous model Animas Ping.
A central feature of the pump is integrated Dexcom G4 platinum sensor
Unfortunately, CGM doesn’t have new software update from Dexcom (v.505).
Comparing Vibe insulin pump integrated the sensor with updated version of Dexcom receiver (v.505) glucose reading are almost the same. The sensor is just a trend of your blood sugar, and your treatment must be based ONLY on blood glucose check by using your glucometer.
Not carrying anymore Dexcom receiver makes Animas Vibe right choice who is using sensor 24 hours/7 days a week. The alarm sound is pretty weak, compare with Dexcom receiver.
No more remote control. Old version-
The first question that I had, what is wrong with t: slim? I didn’t recall any error messages; I changed the infusion set almost every day. I’m using steel cannula, which was never bent it, no air bubbles in infusion tubing.
Tandem t: slim insulin pump is super, stylish and modern pump available today on the market. I analyzed my blood sugar trend over and over again, trying to find out why blood sugar is out of control and most of the time is high. I was searching for information and reading professional research papers about the design of insulin pumps.
Tandem t: slim insulin pump is the great pump, but their speed of insulin delivery too slow for me and bolus algorithm is not for me. One of the main reason for my blood sugar fluctuation based on bolus calculators (every pump has particular algorithm for bolus calculation) – responsible for postprandial hyperglycemia and speed of bolus /basal delivery.
Internet/You Tube/blogs provide with comparison information that is similar from website to website. All this information you can find in pump’s manual. Open box video on You Tube is cool, but it doesn’t describe the technical aspect of the pump functionality.
All information you find here is based ONLY on my personal evaluation of t: slim and Animas Vibe. I also based this information on the latest research and clinical performance of bolus calculators and speed of delivery bolus/basal.
Every insulin pump has differences in the algorithms to calculate correction boluses. Some insulin pumps correct to the midpoint, other to the limits of the target range. I will try to explain how this works and why this is so important.
Automated bolus calculator algorithm based on the target blood glucose level, carbohydrate amount intake, insulin on board and duration of insulin.
Animas Vibe and Roche insulin pump calculate to mid-
Minimed insulin pump is using upper limit example 140 mg/dl and lower limit 80 mg /dl, there is NO mid-
The motor in Animas Vibe pump is similar to previous model Animas Ping. Animas Vibe’s motor is one of the best on the market from my point of view.
1. Precise delivery of insulin
3. Basal frequency OneTouch Verio every 3 min and t: slim every 5 min
Some users reported burning sensation with Animas pump with normal delivery of bolus (quick speed). In this case check on infusion set, what are the length of the cannula and proper infusion set insertion technique.
Based on current researches Animas insulin pump was more efficacious in controlling postprandial hyperglycemia. Tandem t: slim insulin pump was not available during study time.
